Strong US dollar hurts Q2 profits of Switzerland's Novartis

Swiss-based pharmaceutical company Novartis says second-quarter net income dropped 32 percent over the same quarter last year, brought down primarily by poor performance from associated companies and negative effects of a strong U.S. dollar. Second-quarter net income was $1.856 billion, down from $2.723 billion in the same quarter in 2014.

Novartis AG said on Tuesday its second-quarter profit fell 32% from the same period last year, as the Swiss drug giant was hit by a strengthened dollar and a weak result from its eye-care treatment business. Basel-based Novartis said net income fell to $1.86 billion, or $0.77 per share in the quarter ended in June, compared with $2.72 billion a year earlier.

Mattel shares fall as Barbie sales, dollar cut earnings

Shares of Mattel Inc. fell Friday after the company reported a second-quarter loss as another decline in Barbie sales and a strong dollar cut into revenue. The stock fell $1.24, or 4.9 percent, to $23.91 in midday trading.
