Bangladesh Alliance releases final factory safety report

The Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety released its fifth and final annual report on factory safety improvements during its tenure - claiming a 93% remediation rate across factories affiliated with the programme and close to 1.6m workers trained to protect themselves in case of a fire emergency.

Chinese shipments have plunged this year on EU's clothing import market, with rival countries taking advantage of this historical decline. Bangladesh is the more obvious winner, now ranking first in many HS 4-digit categories, but other origins are also benefiting from the shift our of China, mostly due to their duty-free access to the European Union. Morocco and Tunisia have taken advantage of their proximity, whereas Turkey is seizing opportunities offered by free access, proximity and a sharply lower currency. Bangladesh clean textile pact widens scope and impact

The second phase of an initiative to adopt state-of-the-art efficiency and cleaner production practices in Bangladesh's textile value chain has expanded its scope from spinning to the final finished product - and is eyeing savings of 10.9bn litres of water and 1.3m megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy every year.

Global trade unions call for Bangladesh Accord to continue
