KPN sees agreement soon on virtual DSL access
2015-04-02 10:50:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) KPN expects to reach an agreement soon with wholesale customers on its DSL network over upgrades and faster subscriptions, according to COO Joost Farwerck at a press conference on the network plans. The Dutch operator has already rolled out vectoring at up to 100/30 Mbps and bonded vectoring at 200/60 Mbps in part of its footprint. Another 1,000 cabinets will be upgraded in 2015-2016, and the operator plans to focus on street cabinets less than 1,500m from the exchange. To date this has proven complicated in areas with MDF unbundling, as active equipment from Tele2 and Online is present. Vectoring is not possible in street cabinets where customers from other providers are connected. The aim is to reach an agreement with wholesale customers on virtual access, rather than physical unbundling. As part of an agreement with regulator ACM, if KPN agrees virtual access conditions with the alternative operators, it will be able to accelerate its network upgrade plans. The negotiated agreement is aimed at avoiding court appeals of the new broadband access regulation. Farwerck said an agreement is in the interests of all the parties involved, as then other operators can also offer the faster speeds to customers. KPN made its proposal for an 'Open Wholesale Model' last year and hopes to reach an agreement in the coming weeks.

KPN to discontinue Hi brand
2015-03-24 08:59:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) KPN announced it's abandoning its youth mobile brand Hi. Sales of Hi products will stop 01 May, and existing customers will be transfered to KPN-brand services by July. The 52 Hi shops will be closed this summer. The Dutch operator plans to continue with a multi-brand strategy, with 'KPN' offering "full service" and the Telfort and Simyo brands focusing on the low-cost market. KPN said the arrival of 4G and smartphones meant the Hi and KPN customer bases were increasingly similar, as were the product offerings of large data bundles and combined fixed and mobile services. Eliminating the Hi brand also fits with the group's strategy to simplify its operations further. First launched in 1996, Hi was aimed primarily at young people. Telecompaper estimates the brand had 1.5 million customers at the end of 2015. Last year KPN already ended its partnership with MTV Mobile for the youth market. While T-Mobile took up the partnership, it also later decided to end the MTV service.

KPN revives plans for Base sale - report
2015-03-04 08:42:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Dutch operator KPN is reviving plans for the sale of its Belgian mobile operator Base, people with knowledge of the matter told Bloomberg. KPN, which is working with JPMorgan Chase on the possible disposal, may seek about EUR 1 billion for the unit, the report said. Base reported EUR 711 million in sales and EBITDA of EUR 149 million in 2014. KPN tried to sell Base in 2012, but the process was halted after the company received "unsatisfactory" bids. After selling its German unit E-Plus last year, Belgium is the only country where KPN is active outside its home market.
KPN tests tri-band LTE carrier aggregation
2015-02-27 10:39:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) KPN announced the implementation of tri-band carrier aggregation on its mobile network. The operator is the first in the Netherlands and only the third in the world to use the technique. KPN was already using the 800 and 1,800 MHz bands on its 4G network and recently tested a third band, 2.6GHz, with Ericsson and Qualcomm in the area around Delft. With the three frequency bands, the company raised the speed of the LTE network to 297 Mbps, four times more than usual speeds over 4G. KPN said the technology provides a substantial boost to capacity and bandwidth, supporting services such as voice and video over LTE. KPN plans to roll out tri-band CA in areas with high 4G usage and congestion affecting download speeds.
