Location Noordwijk, Netherlands NL Our team and mission The Young Graduate Trainee YGT will be a member of the AOCS and Pointing Systems Section in the GNC, AOCS Pointing Division of ESA. With about 30 staff and contractors, the Division is happy to welcome YGT to contribute to the following duties, in the section PROJECT SUPPORT in the field of AOCS Attitude and Orbit Control Systems and Pointing engineering contributing to conceptual design studies for future missions monitoring the activities of industrial contractors during all phases of satellite procurement, from preliminary definition up to launch participating in project reviews and evaluations of procurement proposals identifying critical development problems and assisting in their resolution TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT contributing to the definition of technology development requirements for space missions and ESA technology programmes covering both long and shortterm needs managing mission enabling RD activities for AOCS and Pointing Systems generic architecture and modes and competitive Building Blocks including Failure Detection Isolation and Recovery FDIR, high accuracy pointing, managing technology development of AOCS sensors and actuators star trackers, sun and Earth sensors, gyroscopes, accelerometers and Inertial Measurement Units, magnetometers, magnetic torquers, fostering advanced control, estimation and optimisation techniques LABORATORY WORK participating in laboratory work for the evaluation and testing of AOCS, pointing systems and associated sensors Pointing Systems Test Facilities, Sensor Test facilities CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT COMMUNICATION monitoring scientifictechnological trends, to maintain stateoftheart expertise contributing to the diffusion of the results of the activities performed and the transfer of knowledge across the Agency and ESA member states preparation and dissemination of standards and handbooks organisation of workshops and conferences. Fields of activities The Young Graduate Trainee will be involved in the prototyping and testing of new AOCS components and hardware in the AOCS Pointing Systems test facilities with emphasis on the following star tracker and image sensor testing, possibly including radiation effects modelling gyro and accelerometer testing sun sensor testing magnetic torque testing The Young Graduate Trainee will work together with a team of staff and contractors. The Young Graduate Trainee will be responsible for the design and production of test equipment both hardware and software, Test Plan production, Test execution and the development of data analysis tools. The Young Graduate Trainee will be responsible for producing test reports for each test performed and documentation for any test equipment and tools developed. As secondary task, the Young Graduate Trainee will be involved in AOCS design tasks, such as AOCS simulator modelling tools development, AOCS estimation and control design performance and robustness assessment and preliminary design of AOCS subsystem for early mission phases, participation to CDF Concurrent Design Facility in support of AOCS expert in charge. This Young Graduate Traineeship will provide to the selected candidate a solid background experience, technical skills and handson knowhow appropriate to develop further in Space engineering careers such as AOCS system engineering, AOCS integration and verification engineering, AOCS hardware design and production engineering, AOCS hardware procurement management, amongst others. Technical competencies Knowledge of relevant technical domains Relevant experience gained during internshipsproject work Breadth of exposure coming from past andor current researchactivities Knowledge of ESA and its programmesprojects Behavioural competencies Self Motivation Communication Continuous Learning CrossCultural Sensitivity Teamwork Education Applicants should have just completed, or be in their final year of a University course at Masters Level or equivalent in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related engineering field is required. Additional requirements Good handson skills and practical experience are an asset. A good awareness of electronic design PCB layout, microcontrollers, basic circuit design and software coding, handson laboratory or test experience would also be important assets. An awareness of the key parameters and methods of operation of AOCS hardware would be highly beneficial. Experience in Visual CBasic, Matlab, Excel and Labview would be an asset. Applicants must be fluent in English andor French, the working languages of the Agency. A good proficiency in English is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset. In addition to the above competencies, applicants should demonstrate good interpersonal skills and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a team. During the interview the candidates motivation and overall professional perspectivecareer goals will also be explored. The applicants must be selfmotivated, have good problemsolving skills and a methodical approach to their work. The candidates must also have a flair for the analytical assessment of test results and the identification of trends as well as the ability to clearly document and communicate their work and results. It provides support to projects, preparatory programs and technology programs. Within this frame, the Thermal Control Section is in charge of all thermal control aspects for the support to projects and the development of thermal hardware technologies, and the Thermal Analysis Verification Section is the focal point for analysis methodologies, software tools and experimentaltest services executed in the Mechanical Systems Laboratory. Generic thermal control technologies Investigate and support the assessment of innovative and advanced technologies for the Thermal Control Subsystem e.g. tunable infrared emittance coatings with electrochromicbased solutions, phasechange materials, heat pumps, etc. Investigate specific thermal technologies for small satellites and CubeSats. 6. Thermal Analysis methods Research and development in the area of computational methods for space thermal analysis or multidisciplinary analysis e.g. a. techniques and tools for exchange of thermal analysis data with other disciplines such as structures e.g. development of SINAS b. cosimulation of thermal analysis models with other domains such as power or fluids c. next generation methods for radiative, fluidic or thermal analysis d. methods for improved tooltotool data exchange within the thermal domain development of STEPTAS. 7. Analysis methods in support of testing activities real time model correlation or identification of discrepancies between model and test data, analysis methods for new test instrumentation such as infrared cameras, data fusion of thermal analysis and test data, modelling of gas convection for cleanroom testing. 8. Mechanical Systems Laboratory Participation in the testing activities of the laboratory to get familiar with the organisation and execution of tests and the evaluation of test data.
