Payment card data was stolen during the past three months from several dozen retailers that had their point-of-sale systems infected with a memory-scraping malware program called ChewBacca. The cyber criminal operation was investigated by antifraud researchers from RSA, the security division of EMC, who analyzed the malware and its command-and-control infrastructure.

Spoofed versions of the popular file transfer program FileZilla that steal data are circulating on third-party websites, the organization behind the software said Tuesday.FileZilla is an open source application, and hackers have taken its source code and modified it in order to try to steal data for more than a decade. In a surprising TV interview, a 23-year-old living in Russia said he helped code a software program that experts believe was eventually modified to steal tens of millions of payment card details from Target.
