Attackers exploited a vulnerability in Adobe ColdFusion to install data-stealing malware that works as a module for Microsoft's IIS (Internet Information Services) Web server software. Researchers from security firm Trustwave recently reported they've identified IIS (Internet Information Server) Web servers infected with malicious IIS modules designed to steal information submitted by users on websites hosted on those servers.

If you get a spam message advertising an application called "Bitcoin Alarm," the name may tell you all you need to know. The desktop Windows application sends price alerts by SMS to a mobile phone. But closer examination of its code turned up several suspicious traits that indicate it may try to steal the virtual currency, wrote Kenny MacDermid, a research analyst with security company Arbor Networks.

Trustwave's SpiderLabs researchers have found a piece of malware that collects data entered into Web-based forms, pretending to be a module for Microsoft's Internet Information Services (IIS) Web-hosting software. The malware, which is dubbed "ISN," hasn't been widely seen, but its characteristics are interesting, wrote Josh Grunzweig, a Trustwave malware researcher, on a company blog.

There will be less malware spreading through networks next year as hackers focus on obtaining credentials that allow them to access systems.
