Growing mobile malware threat swirls (mostly) around Android

Mobile devices are getting hit by a boom in malware similar to the one that hit PCs starting with the rise of the Web, a security software executive said Tuesday. "Mobile platforms, for a lot of attackers, represent a new target-rich environment," said Chris Doggett, senior vice president, North America, at Kaspersky Lab. He was addressing a panel discussion at the CTIA Wireless trade show in Las Vegas at which officials from government and industry laid out the dangers of mobile malware and steps being taken to fight it.

The computer virus seems to be making a subtle comeback. The term virus is frequently used as a catch-all for malicious software, but actually describes a very specific type of program that infects files and replicates, noticeable impairing a computer. Most malware these days tries to not be so obvious.

Facebook attacked with credential-harvesting malware

A new variant of the Dorkbot malware was discovered spreading through Facebook's internal chat service, in an attempt by cyber criminals to harvest users' passwords. Bitdefender researchers discovered links to the malware circulating among Facebook users in the United States, India, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Germany, Turkey and Romania. The security firm did not know the extent of the infection on Monday, but said it counted 9,000 malicious links to the malware in 24 hours.

Internet Explorer 10 beats Chrome and Firefox at blocking malware downloads

Internet Explorer 10 users are far less likely to suffer malware infections while Web browsing compared to users of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Opera, according to a recent independent study by NSS Labs.
