Vodacom group revenue up 5.6% to ZAR 44.4 bln in H1

(Telecompaper) Vodacom Group revenue increased by 5.6 percent to ZAR 44.36 billion in the company's fiscal first half to 30 September. Service revenue rose by 6.1 percent to ZAR 36.77 billion, and EBITDA was up 4.7 percent to ZAR 16.47 billion. The group added 4.8 million customers in the six months, including 2.5 million in South Africa, 2.3 million in international operations and 373,000 at Safaricom, for a total base of over 109 million customers at the end of the period.

(Telecompaper) MTN Group's dispute with Nigerian authorities over USD 10 billion in repatriated funds and back taxes could increase risk in South Africa's financial system, depending on the outcome, the South African Reserve Bank said, according to Bloomberg. In its Financial Stability Review released in Pretoria, the bank said if MTN eventually repatriates the disputed amount to Nigerian authorities, this could affect its ability to meet its debt obligations, especially in South Africa.

Nokia wins contracts worth EUR 2 bln from three Chinese operators

(Telecompaper) Nokia announced it has signed three separate frame agreements worth a combined value of more than EUR 2 billion with China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom. IBM buys Red Hat for USD 34 bln

(Telecompaper) Open source software provider Red Hat has accepted a takeover bid from IBM worth about USD 34 billion in cash, or USD 190.0 per share. IBM CEO Ginni Rometty called the deal a "game-changer," transforming the company into the world's number one hybrid cloud provider. Rommetty said that with Red Hat, IBM will be able to provide a full value open cloud service to help companies continue their move to the a hybrid multi-cloud, with expertise in key technologies such as Linux, containers, Kubernetes, multi-cloud and cloud management, and automation. IBM has been working with Red Hat for 20 years.
