HP wins USD 3 bln award in Oracle server case
2016-07-01 08:56:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) HP Enterprise has won USD 3 billion in damages in a suit against Oracle, the Wall Street Journal reports. A jury in Silicon Valley found that Oracle should pay HP Enterprise for violating a contract between the companies when it decided in 2011 to stop creating new versions of its database and other software for systems running Intel's Itanium chip. HP had argued that this violated terms of a settlement associated with its hiring of former HP CEO Mark Hurd, and that Oracle, which had expanded into servers by buying Sun Microsystems, had set out to hurt its new rival by the move. Oracle denied wrongdoing and vowed to appeal the jury decision.
EC green lights EUR 4 bln Italian high-speed broadband plan

(Telecompaper) The European Commission has approved Italy's EUR 4 billion high-speed broadband plan, describing it as "in line with EU state aid rules". The announcement comes a month after Italian infrastructure firm Infratel launched the first tenders to bring fast internet access to digital divide areas in six regions, with more promised before summer. EU competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager said the plan "will help Italy to build the necessary infrastructure and contribute to creating a connected Digital Single Market in the EU". The country expects to minimise the use of state funds by encouraging bidders to use existing networks to the maximum extent possible, said the EC in a statement, adding that competition will be fostered by ensuring that the newly built infrastructure is open to all interested operators.
