Sky buys Vodafone NZ for NZD 3.4 bln

(Telecompaper) Sky and Vodafone NZ have agreed to merge their operations in New Zealand. Under the terms of the deal, Sky will acquire all of the shares in Vodafone NZ for NZD 3.437 million in cash and shares. The cash consideration for Vodafone will amount to NZD 1.25 billion, to be funded through new debt. Sky will also issue new shares, giving Vodafone a 51 percent interest in the combined group. The new Sky shares will be issued at NZD 5.40 per share. The new company will be led by Russell Stanners, currently CEO of Vodafone NZ. Sky chairman Peter Macourt will become chairman of the board. The board of Sky fully supports the proposed transaction and unanimously recommends shareholders to vote in favour.
LTE subscriber numbers double to 1.29 bln in Q1

(Telecompaper) LTE gained 182 million connections in Q1, that's almost 4 times faster than 3G/HSPA systems, according to a report by the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA). 3G/HSPA subscriptions grew by 48 million while GSM subscriptions fell by 120 million in the same quarter. The number of LTE and LTE-Advanced subscriptions is expected to pass the 3G/WCDMA-HSPA global total in 2020, and possibly sooner. Analysing mobile subscriptions data provided to GSA by Ovum for Q1, GSA said that the number of LTE and LTE-Advanced subscriptions reached 1.29 billion worldwide by 31 March. Over 645 million LTE subscriptions worldwide were gained during the past year, representing 100 percent annual growth.

Amazon puts additional USD 3 bln into Indian business

(Telecompaper) Amazon.com wants to put an additional USD 3 billion into developing its India operations, Bloomberg. The latest commitment, unveiled by CEO Jeff Bezos at the US-India Business Council's Leadership Summit in Washington, more than doubles Amazon's total pledged investment since 2014 to USD 5 billion. Amazon has targeted India for international growth after pulling back from China due to fierce competition from Alibaba. In addition to seeking new customers, Amazon is also looking in India for new inventory to sell globally.

Tencent ups syndicated loan to USD 4.4 bln

(Telecompaper) Tencent is increasing the size of a syndicated loan from USD 2 billion to 4.4 billion, Bloomberg reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. The company now has commitments from 25 lenders for the facility. Tencent was not available for an immediate response.

Verizon bids USD 3 bln for Yahoo core assets - report

(Telecompaper) Verizon will submit a second-round bid of USD 3 billion for Yahoo's core internet business, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. The deadline closed on 6 June. Yahoo is expected to hold at least one more cycle of bidding, and the offers could change by the final round, the sources said. Both Verizon and Yahoo declined to comment.
