Enel reveals EUR 2.5 bln fibre plan to connect 7.5 mln homes

(Telecompaper) Italian utility giant Enel has confirmed plans to invest a total of EUR 2.5 billion to help bring ultrafast broadband to around 7.5 million homes in 224 Italian cities. In a statement, the company said its newly-created Enel Open Fiber venture will take advantage of the installation of around 30 million smart electric meters over the next four years to run fibre cables into homes and offices all over Italy. Enel Open Fiber will operate as a wholesale-only player and will build infrastructure for other licensed operators, said the company, with CEO Francesco Starace adding that "installing fibre cables through our electricity network, which reaches the businesses and homes of 32 million Italians, will enable wide-ranging coverage of the country at competitive costs."
Airtel to buy Videocon spectrum in 6 circles for INR 44 bln

(Telecompaper) Indian operator Bharti Airtel has agreed to acquire Videocon Telecom's spectrum in six circles for INR 44.28 billion. Airtel will acquire rights to use 2 x 5 MHz spectrum in the 1800 MHz frequency band. The spectrum deal includes Videocon's spectrum in Bihar, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, UP (East), UP (West) and Gujarat. The spectrum license expires in December 2032.

Commercial lender China Zheshang Bank Co Ltd launched on Monday an initial public offering worth up to $1.75 billion in Hong Kong, the city's first sizeable new listing this year, as companies step up efforts to raise funds. The bank, based in China's eastern Zhejiang province, is offering 3.3 billion shares in an indicative range of HK$3.92 to HK$4.12 each, Thomson Reuters publication IFR reported, citing a term sheet of the transaction.

LTE infrastructure revenue up 3% to USD 13 bln in Q4

(Telecompaper) Global LTE mobile infrastructure revenue grew to a record USD 13 billion in the fourth quarter, up 11 percent from the previous quarter and 3 percent year on year, driven by large-scale rollouts in China and India, according to a report from Infonetics. However, China has now reached the end of its massive LTE rollouts led by China Unicom and China Telecom, while LTE builds in Western and Central Europe are very close to completion, suggesting LTE has peaked and 2016 will be its first year of decline, said the report.
