Equinix closes USD 3.8 bln Telecity acquisition

(Telecompaper) US data centre operator Equinix has completed the acquisition of UK-based Telecity for USD 3.8 billion, consolidating its position as the largest retail colocation provider in Europe. Originally announced in May as a recommended cash and share offer, the transaction was approved last week by Telecity shareholders and UK regulators, having obtained the European Commission's green light in November. As part of the deal, Telecity chairman John Hughes will be joining the board of directors of Equinix, and Equinix EMEA president Eric Schwartz will serve as the head of the combined regional business in EMEA.

Softbank to boost India investments to USD 10 bln

The company has invested over USD 2 billion in Indian firms over the past year, The Times of India reports, citing SoftBank chairman Masayoshi Son. Son said that the internet and solar sectors are of most interest to him. "We are very happy with the portfolio we have. We will continue to look for new opportunities. Internet and solar are the sectors that excite me", Son said.

Obama to back self-driving cars plan with USD 4 bln

(Telecompaper) US Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx will unveil at the Detroit auto show on 14 January a plan to develop a national programme for autonomous driving technology within the next six months, writes Recode. President Obama plans to insert USD 4 billion into the 2017 budget to back a 10-year programme whose aim is to support and quicken vehicle automation projects.

TeliaSonera says to book 7.2 bln SEK of impairment charges in Q4

Jan 14 Nordic telecom operator TeliaSonera said on Thursday it will book 7.2 billion Swedish crowns in non-cash impairment charges mainly related to Uzbekistan in the wake of its decision to gradually exit the Central Asian market. TeliaSonera said in a statement it would take an impairment charge of 5.3 billion crowns in the fourth quarter related to its operations in Uzbekistan and that its business in the region, which it calls Eurasia, would be reported as discontinued operations.

TeliaSonera takes SEK 7.2 bln charges for Eurasia, Denmark

(Telecompaper) TeliaSonera will report its Region Eurasia as discontinued operations in its full-year results and will be taking impairment charges totaling SEK 7.2 billion related to operations in Uzbekistan and Denmark. The news is part of the company's strategy to gradually pull out of Region Eurasia, which will be reported as held for sale. As a result, the operating profit for the fourth quarter will include a one-off non-cash charge of SEK 5.3 billion related to the company's operations in Uzbekistan and another of SEK 1.9 billion for operations in Denmark, following the company's withdrawal from the proposed joint venture with Telenor in Denmark.
