Whirlpool seeks update to Arkansas cleanup plan

Officials say the company wants to remove toxic soils near the plant building as well as use vaporization to remove a chemical compound used as an industrial solvent. The Southwest Times Record reports Whirlpool was given the nod last December for a cleanup plan after working with the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality.

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has concluded that the burial of material from metal drums observed by a homeless man north of Linnton about 15 years ago was a duly authorized cleanup, not an illegal dumping of toxic waste. As reported by the Portland Tribune Nov. 20, former Portland resident Norman Wicks Sr. and his son Norman Wicks Jr. grew suspicious when barrels kept accumulating on property under a BPA transmission line, and the drums later disappeared after a big trench was dug on the site.

Study of Montana Mining Town Says Cleanup Working

A long-delayed risk study released Monday for a Montana mining town where hundreds of people have died from asbestos poisoning concludes cleanup practices now in place are reducing risks to residents. However, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency acknowledged there is no way to remove all the asbestos from the area and inhaling even a minute amount could cause lung problems.
