The work package covers the support in the domain of human physiology and biology, performing the following tasks Assistance in the provision of specific engineering support to ESA projects Provision of support in detailed technical specification of planned RD activities Assistance in the technical evaluation of development results, as well as designs from projects Conceptual planning and implementation of test setups in the microgravity laboratory Planning, settingup and execution of test activities in the laboratory Analysis, evaluation, reporting and interpretation of data of biological or physiological experiments Support of Breadboard testing and sample evaluation for Life Support activities. Requirements The incumbent shall have a Master degree PhD in Process Engineering,Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering or similar fields with knowledge and experience of space systems engineering. Hands on lab experience in handling microbial samples and relevant lab instrumentation is an asset. STFCs RAL space department operates at the forefront of UK space research, with significant involvement in over 200 space missions to date. We carry out an exciting range of worldclass space research and technology development, including designing, building and testing groundbased instruments for agencies including ESA, NASA and ESO. About The Role We now have a new opportunity for a talented Control and Instrumentation lead within our AIT Group, with responsibility for designing, developing, installing, managing and maintaining equipment which is used to monitor and control engineering systems and processes in our test facilities. The AIT Group operates leading instrument integration and calibration facilities, including thermal vacuum chambers, vacuum bake out chambers, a vibration test facility and inspection and metrology equipment. The group is responsible for the development and operation of a range of test facilities for the assembly and qualification of space hardware for both RAL Space and the wider user community. RAL space has recently attracted multimillion pound investment to develop a national satellite test facility NSTF which will allow a step change in the capability available in the UK. This will expand our remit from providing AIT facilities for our own instrument programs to include larger scale projects up to complete spacecraft level. The new facilities will include large scale vibration, acoustic, EMC and mechanical properties facilities along with an 8m diameter thermal vacuum chamber. The new facilities will allow AIT campaigns for the complete size range of spacecraft to be completed within the UK for the first time. Further Responsibilities will include researching, designing and developing new systems and devices, used to control and monitor RAL Space operational facilities, involving aspects of both software and hardware engineering ensuring all measurement chains are calibrated to the necessary standards, including the design, procurement and use of suitable equipment and tools ensuring all inhouse or complex systems conforms to the relevant European Norms and directives overseeing the design, development, test and configuration of all facility control and acquisition system hardware overseeing the design, development and test of data storage, formatting and reporting systems line management of staff management of product rollouts, training and maintenance activities understanding and ensuring compliance with relevant health and safety regulations and quality standards writing computer software and test procedures. About You You will be educated to degree level in electronic engineering or similar, with accreditation to a professional institute e.g. IET or InstMC desirable. You will have significant DAQ experience from within the aerospace industry or an equivalent field, along with experience of developing solutions for data gathering and analysis, including database design and development. You will also demonstrate experience of delivery of control and acquisition systems from concepts, through design, development, test and implementation, as well as staff and project management experience. You will display the ability to translate project requirements into the design and then develop into HWSW, while knowledge of CE marking measurement uncertainty budgets and relevant European Directives are all desirable. You will demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal and team working skills, as well as the ability to solve problems creatively. Summary An opportunity for an experienced ScientistEngineer with experience of biotech process related to Space environment to work for Telespazio VEGA onsite at ESTEC. Objective To provide RD and project support including to industrial contracts. Operation and Maintenance of the Microgravity and Gravity Simulation and Life Support Laboratory. Responsibilities Duties Duties will include but not limited to Equipment maintenance and calibration. Identification and selection of required equipment and procurement. Stock and equipment inventory. Rearrangement of lab according to planned activities. Test and test support. Testing of RD prototype instrumentation breadboards. Technical and operational support for large test setups in particular for trainee projects. Evaluation of test reports and operation manuals supplied with breadboards. Management of Industrial Contracts.
