How Sequoias Survive Wildfires

National Geographic: As the Rim Fire rages in and around Yosemite National Park, biologists have taken steps to protect two groves of giant sequoia trees. One tree expert suspects, however, that the measures have more to do with public relations than with sound forest policy. The Rim Fire has burned for nine days, razing 134,000 acres, which makes it one of the biggest blazes in California's history. The flames have largely been confined to Yosemite's remote northwestern section, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) from...

Yosemite Fire an Example of How Droughts Amplify Wildfires

2013-08-27 00:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Climate Central: The massive Rim Fire near Yosemite National Park in California is an example of how drought can amplify wildfires in a warming, drying West. The fire, which now ranks as the 14th-largest wildfire in state history, has been racing through parched stands of oak and pine trees, and threatening some of the region's iconic giant sequoia trees. The vegetation in the area, and indeed across much of central and southern California, is extremely dry, as the state has experienced its driest year-to-date....

California on edge as wildfires spread

2013-08-22 15:36:57| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

San Francisco Chronicle: What was expected to be a bad fire season is turning out to be just that. Nearly a dozen major fires, some touched off by an unusual string of lightning storms, are burning across California wildlands parched by back-to-back dry winters. Twice as much of the state has burned this year as had gone up in flames at this point in 2012. One of the worst blazes is the Rim Fire, which raged out of control for a fifth day Wednesday in nearly inaccessible terrain west of Yosemite National Park. Hundreds...

Associated Press: An out-of-control forest fire threatening more than 2,000 structures near Yosemite national park was one of more than 50 active, large wildfires dotting the western US on Wednesday. The remote blaze in Stanislaus national forest west of Yosemite grew to more than 25 sq miles and was only 5% contained, causing evacuations and threatening homes, hotels and camp buildings. The fire was among the nation's top firefighting priorities, according to the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho....
