Ruutu HbbTV 1.5 online video service launched in Finland

A collaboration between Nelonen Media, Digita and Sofia Digital has brought the online video service 'Ruutu' to the Finnish terrestrial TV network. Viewers tuned to the Digita network with an HbbTV 1.5 activated receiver have been able to use the service since June 24th.

Nintendo is shutting down its video service for the Wii U console less than three years after it began, but few users are lamenting its demise. "Every service has a life cycle, and it is time to focus our resources on other projects," Nintendo said, adding that third-party video-on-demand apps will still work on the Wii U console.

The country's largest wireless provider teased a few details of its upcoming offerings Tuesday while announcing it had completed its $4.4 billion purchase of AOL Inc. The deal is designed to help Verizon Communications Inc. expand in mobile video and advertising as more hours are spent watching video, reading and shopping on phones and tablets. Verizon's mobile video service will work on competitors' networks as well as on Wi-Fi and will include ad-supported data, says Verizon executive vice president Marni Walden.
