New York Times: After Kullin Orcutt lost his job at the Peabody coal mine this spring, he knew what he needed to do: join the exodus. Leave Gillette, leave the state, he said. Mr. Orcutt is a third-generation miner and one of 592 coal workers who have been laid off here since January. Thousands more job cuts are expected this summer. More people will follow Mr. Orcutt. While many businesses in Gillette are struggling to stay open, a U-Haul dealer has been nearly sold out since the school year ended this month....
Coal isn't dying because there's a war on it

Bloomberg: I never cease to be amazed how people with an agenda massage facts, or omit them, in order to support their cause. It comes up in the investing world, where these agendas often lead to money-losing decisions. Being able to detect this sort of nonsense is good over the long run for your investment portfolio. I was reminded of this recently when I read a report from the American Action Forum. The report says that just five year ago the market value of the four biggest coal companies was more...

Climate Home: The Swedish government is expected to decide this week whether to allow the sale of some of Europe`s most polluting assets. At issue are state-owned Vattenfall`s brown coal mines and plants in Germany, which it wants to offload to Czech firm EPH. That would go against UN climate deal struck in Paris, say critics, calling for the dirty fuel to be left in the ground. Olivia Linander of 350.org urged the ruling parties to "show they take the Paris Agreement seriously" by blocking the transaction....

Sydney Morning Herald: The effects of coral bleaching include the formation of an insidious layer of slime, now coating a vast area of the Great Barrier Reef, scientists say. A thumping majority of Australians want the health of the Great Barrier Reef prioritised over coal mining, according to a survey of more than 63,000 Fairfax Media readers. People living in mining states, the lower-educated, older people and men were less likely to agree to such a trade-off. Queensland's Abbot Point, surrounded by wetlands...

Climate change or not, power-starved India just can't help burning more coal
2016-06-15 08:50:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Quartz: More than a fifth of India's population lacks access to electricity, posing a major development challenge. India's prime minister Narendra Modi has promised to bring affordable access to electricity to all of these people by 2019. While Modi has committed to increasing renewable power generation, India is also increasing coal production. India is the world's third-largest coal producer and its second-largest coal importer. This is increasing the tension between development and India's efforts...
