Concern raised over dumping coal ash in James

Around 50 people, concerned with Dominion's plan to discharge water contaminated with coal ash into the James River at Bremo Bluff, attended a public meeting Tuesday, Dec. 1, in Palmyra to learn more about the permit application. The plant recently converted from burning coal to natural gas in order to generate electricity.

Settlement agreement reached in Seward coal terminal lawsuit

A settlement has been reached between two environmental groups, the Alaska Railroad and the company that transfers coal to ships at Seward, over coal that spills into Resurrection Bay. The settlement requires the railroad and Aurora Energy Services LLC to make improvements to the Seward coal-loading facility and pay $10,000 for a watershed conservation project.

Residents on Potomac River Coal Ash Plan: We weren't notified

Virginia environmental officials took questions Tuesday night from the public about a plan to treat toxic water and drain it into the Potomac River. Residents who live near Dominion Virginia Power's Possum Point Power Station outside Dumfries and across from Quantico say they're fearful of the plan, which could lead to higher than normal levels of heavy metals in Quantico Creek and Potomac River that would flow downstream to the Chesapeake Bay.

Judge questions 'beneficial use' of coal ash dump

The state Department of Environmental Quality in June approved the sites to accept coal ash as "engineered structural fill." Duke started moving ash to the Brickhaven mine near Moncure in October and is expected to start dumping ash at the Colon site near Sanford next year.
