La-Z-Boy Inc. on Tuesday reported a fiscal first quarter profit of $13.7 million, or 27 cents a share, up 4 percent over the same period a year ago when the nation's third-largest furniture maker had profits of $13.1 million, or 25 cents a share. For the period, the company had sales of $341.4 million, up 4 percent from a year ago when sales were $326.9 million.

Big Data startup Altiscale, built by former Yahoo Chief Technology Officer Raymie Stata to make Hadoop easier to use, raised $30 million in Series B funding. The Palo Alto company said the round was led by Northgate, with previous investors Sequoia Capital and General Catalyst Partners participating.

Kia Motors America has tapped LimeGreen Chicago as its multicultural agency - a big win for a local ad shop and another sign that multicultural advertising is a growing - and increasingly important - segment of the overall United States ad industry. Last week multicultural shop Commonground Chicago said it was a key partner in the formation of the first-ever minority-owned multicultural ad agency holding company in the United States.

David Earp, a former Geron executive, started with with Circle Pharma as an advisor through at QB3 program. He became president and CEO in October 2013, overseeing the company in its collaborations with Pfizer Inc. Startup Circle Pharma Inc., a UCSF and UC Santa Cruz spinout devising ways to disrupt a wide variety of diseases from inside cells, will work with Pfizer Inc. on two drug programs.
