Propane shortage impacting corn harvest

Parts of the Upper Midwest are experiencing temporary shortages of propane (LP) gas to dry the corn that is currently being harvested. Propane inventories are very tight at many of the terminals in southern Minnesota, resulting in limited availability to local cooperatives, and ultimately to farm operators, in some areas. Farmers Make Great Strides at Harvest

Source: U.S. Department of Agriculture   Farmers feverishly working in their fields have made great strides in their efforts to complete this year’s corn and soybean harvests. Statistics released today by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) show that completion of corn harvest has advanced from 39% for the week ending Oct. 20 to 59% for the week ending Oct. 27 in the 18 major crop-producing states. That compares with 2012’s record of 91% completed and the 2008-2012 average of 62% completed. read more

Source: Ohio State University Leaving corn to dry in the field exposes a crop to unfavorable weather conditions, as well as wildlife damage. A crop with weak plant integrity is more vulnerable to yield losses from stalk lodging and ear drop when weathering conditions occur. Additional losses may occur when ear rots reduce grain quality and can lead to significant dockage when the grain is marketed. Oct. 21 Crop Progress: Corn crop less than half harvested, soybean harvest closing in on average pace

Its been a few weeks since the last USDA Crop Progress report, but despite the lack of reports, corn and soybean harvest has progressed and farmers have been busy in the field. The overall corn crop is nearly 40% harvested and 60% of the corn is in good/excellent condition. Sixty-three percent of the soybean crop has been harvested, and 57% of the crop is in good/excellent condition. read more
