SRC moves toward giving 3 schools to charter firms

The School Reform Commission voted Thursday to begin the process of giving three struggling Philadelphia public schools to charter companies. Commissioners considered the fates of Jay Cooke, Samuel B. Huey, and John Wister Elementaries at a tense and raucous meeting attended by hundreds, with a long public session frequently interrupted by shouts, jeers, applause, and finger-pointing.

S.C. car dealer bill over closing fees lawsuit moves closer to Senate

A hotly contested bill that would kill some 200 pending consumer class action lawsuits against car dealers was passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday. But a minority report to be filed by Sen. Brad Hutto, D-Orangeburg, who opposes the bill, makes it likely the bill, under Senate rules, will need a supermajority of 30 or 31 senators to get to the floor for debate and a vote.
