Russia warms faster than rest of planet and sees disease, drought, and forest fires as a result

Quartz: When Vladimir Putin declined to support the Kyoto Protocol, a treaty to limit carbon emissions, he famously quipped that higher temperatures might actually benefit Russia since its people would have to spend less on fur coats. Well, he`s getting his wish. Changes in wind and ocean currents caused by global warming shift heat around unevenly, causing some areas to heat up dramatically even as other regions cool. Russia, it turns out, is in the unusually hot category. Between 1976 and 2012, average...
64-bit Chrome finally available to download: Faster, more secure, twice as stable
2014-08-27 15:44:50| Extremetech
At long last, Google has released a stable 64-bit version of Chrome for Windows. It's faster, more secure, and more stable. Some tasks, such as decoding HD video on YouTube, are 15% faster under the 64-bit version of Chrome. The only major caveat seems to be a lack of support for 32-bit NPAPI plug-ins -- Silverlight and Java, and lots of lesser-known plug-ins, won't work on 64-bit Chrome. That's a small price to pay for increased speed, security, and twice the stability of 32-bit Chrome, though.

"Heat Islands" Cook U.S. Cities Faster Than Ever
2014-08-22 17:57:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Scientific American: Cities are almost always hotter than the surrounding rural area but global warming takes that heat and makes it worse. In the future, this combination of urbanization and climate change could raise urban temperatures to levels that threaten human health, strain energy resources, and compromise economic productivity. Summers in the U.S. have been warming since 1970. But on average across the country cities are even hotter, and have been getting hotter faster than adjacent rural areas. With more...
