Climate change pushes some companies and their data centers to go green
2013-04-29 13:49:56| InfoWorld: Top News
When Hurricane Sandy decimated a large portion of the East Coast last year, companies and their data centers wound up without electricity for days or, in some cases, even weeks. The consequences of that and other recent severe storms are spurring some companies to plug into natural gas pipelines to fuel their electricity needs while others look to become completely energy independent -- even going as far as collecting rain to supply their water needs.

Sweden: Local produce no climate change panacea: study
2013-04-29 09:11:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Local: Consumers worried about climate change should cut down on meat rather than put their efforts into buying local produce, according to a new Swedish study. Researchers at the non-profit IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute went through the contents of different grocery bags, analyzing and adding up the carbon emissions of each item. The study concluded that the distance that food travelled to reach Swedish consumers did have an impact, but that the difference was marginal. "To have local...

Plants slow climate change by forming cloud sunshade, study finds
2013-04-28 19:31:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: Plants help to slow climate change by emitting gases as temperatures rise that lead to the formation of a sunshade of clouds over the planet, scientists said on Sunday. The tiny sun-dimming effect could offset about one per cent of warming worldwide and up to 30 per cent locally such as over vast northern forests in Siberia, Canada or the Nordic nations, they wrote in the journal Nature Geoscience. While proportionally small, some scientists said the study provided further evidence of the importance...
