Learning from Europe's carbon price crash: we need a carbon bank

2013-05-02 06:12:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Conversation: The dramatic fall in Europes carbon price in April led to claims emissions trading had failed as a model for addressing climate change. While the low EU price is problematic for the EU and Australia (by virtue of our linkage with the EU), carbon pricing is still the most efficient tool to address climate change at the scale required. It may be more productive to discuss what we can learn from the European Unions experience. What design features should be built into both existing and future emissions...

Why Europes carbon collapse wont kill emissions markets

Cleantechnica: For carbon markets across the world it was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Plummeting European Union carbon prices following a key EU vote seem to demonstrate in the clearest terms that cap and trade is doomed to fail. After all, if carbon trading cant make it in Europe, it cant make it anywhere, said Bryan Walsh of Time. But declaring the death of carbon markets and cap and trade policy over Europes struggles is a knee-jerk reaction which overlooks significant developments for...

Guardian: Europe's climate chief vowed on Wednesday to fight on to save the EU's flagship environmental policy, the emissions trading system (ETS), after a serious blow on Tuesday when MEPs rejected reforms aimed at repairing the ailing system. MEPs voted 334 against to 315 in favour of "backloading" the market - a proposal aimed to reverse the plummeting price of carbon that has resulted from a surplus of permits in the ETS market - leading the price of carbon to fall by almost half to under EUR3 on Tuesday....
