BP wins one court ruling, loses another over 2010 Gulf spill 3:48 pm...
2015-09-08 23:36:37| Oil & Gas - Topix.net
A U.S. appeals court said BP P.L.C., which in July reached an $18.7 billion settlement of federal, state and local claims over the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill, must face one of two proposed class action lawsuits claiming that the oil company defrauded shareholders over the disaster. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans said investors who bought BP's American depositary shares in a 33-day period soon after the spill may pursue group claims that BP initially "lowballed" the oil flow rate, and that the share price tumbled as the crisis' magnitude became known.

North Sea oil companies have been particularly hard hit by the near 55% decline in Brent crude prices since June 2014, as they were already facing some of the industry's highest operating costs in one of the world's most mature basins.

Kyle Bass Loses Round 1 of IPR Attack Against Pharma/Biotech Patents
2015-08-29 06:06:18| Biotech - Topix.net
On August 24, 2015, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board declined institution of two petitions filed by Coalition For Affordable Drugs for Inter Partes Reviews of Acorda's patents covering Ampyra, a billion-dollar drug for treating multiple sclerosis. The Petitioner, Coalition For Affordable Drugs, is a wholly owned subsidiary of a hedge fund managed by Kyle Bass, which appears to have little to do with the life science and drug industry other than filing IPR petitions against patents owned by pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.
