Lost Whaling Ships Discovered in Arctic Thanks to Global Warming

National Geographic: When archaeologists searched the remote northwestern coast of Alaska this fall, they didn't think they'd find much of interest, or anything intact, due to the area's extreme weather and destructive cycles of freezing and thawing. But then they were surprised to come across large sections of wooden hulls from two nineteenth century whaling ships, as well as artifacts like anchors, chains, struts, and pots for whale oil. "One would expect anything sitting on the seabed for that long to have been...

Overcoming hurdles to climate change adaptation in the Arctic
2016-01-07 13:00:00| LifeSciencesWorld
[NEWS] Outdated land management practices, a dearth of local decision-making bodies with real powers, a lack of long-term planning, along with long-standing educational and financial disempowerment and marginalization are among the hurdles the prevent Arctic communities from adapting to climate change, says a McGill-led research team. But Arctic communities inherently have the capacity to adapt to significant climate change. That's partly because they are used to accepting a chan…

Researchers say less Arctic sea ice means more precipitation
2015-12-22 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Associated Press: A research paper published Monday by U.S. and Canadian scientists says less sea ice in the Arctic has meant more precipitation is falling. Lead author Ben Kopec, of Dartmouth College, says researchers looked at 20 years of precipitation data at sites in the Canadian Arctic and the Greenland Sea. They measured isotope compositions to determine whether moisture originated in the Arctic or from lower latitudes. They found that as sea ice diminished, more precipitation fell and more came from Arctic...

Bad news: Scientists say we could be underestimating Arctic methane emissions
2015-12-22 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Washington Post: Arctic permafrost has become a recent star in the climate change conversation, capturing the attention of scientists, activists and policymakers alike because of its ability to emit large quantities of carbon dioxide as well as methane a particularly potent though relatively short-lived greenhouse gas when it thaws. As temperatures rise in the Arctic, scientists are increasingly concerned that permafrost will become a major contributor to the greenhouse gas emissions driving global warming. ...
