Arctic sea ice slightly down on 2013
2014-12-15 14:08:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Blue and Green: The latest data from Europes CryoSat has revealed that Arctic sea ice in October was slightly lower than that recorded in 2013. However, researchers added that the data does not necessarily indicate a turn in the long-term downward trend. In 2012 Arctic sea ice cover shrank to its lowest ever point. According to a study average ice volume between 2003 and 2008 was 11,900 cubic km in the autumn months, but between 2010 and 2012 this dropped by over a third to 7,600 cubic km. Arctic sea ice...
Canadas High Arctic polar bears running out of time
2014-12-08 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Edmonton Journal: Until this year, Andrew Derocher was convinced Canadas High Arctic islands, where the sea so far remains frozen, would always support some polar bears while populations declined elsewhere. But a new study modelling melting sea ice shows that wont likely be the case, says the University of Alberta professor and Canadas foremost expert on polar bears. Its pretty clear, by the end of the century all those areas will have problems sustaining a population of polar bears, Derocher said in an interview...
With sea ice melting, Coast Guard proposing new shipping lanes to the Arctic
2014-12-07 15:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Associated Press: With global warming leading to increased traffic to a vulnerable Arctic, the U.S. Coast Guard is proposing a 4.6-mile wide shipping route through the Bering Strait to try to protect the region. Any accident in the sensitive area can be a major problem and traffic has increased tremendously, so the Coast Guard mapped out a voluntary two-way route -- akin to a highway for ships -- said agency project officer Lt. Kody Stitz. "We see more traffic and envision more traffic to continue," Stitz said....
The End and Beginning of the Arctic

Climate Central: In the winter of 2013--14, hundreds of milk-white birds with luminous yellow eyes and wingspans of up to 5 feet descended on beaches, farmers' fields, city parks and airport runways throughout southern Canada and the United States. Traditionally, snowy owls spend most of their time in the Arctic and subarctic regions. But every four years or so when populations of lemmings -- among the owl's favorite foods -- cycle downward, a small number of young, inexperienced birds that are less adept than...

As Sea Ice Disappears, Arctic Ringed Seals Could Get Largest Critical Habitat Ever
2014-12-04 00:29:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Scientific American: Arctic ringed seals (Phoca hispida hispida) could soon get a critical habitat more than twice the size of California within the Bering, Chukchi and Beaufort seas. Under rules (pdf) proposed this week by the National Marine Fisheries Service, the seals could have more than 900,000 square kilometers of protected waters. The seals were declared threatened with extinction under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) two years ago, mainly because of the decline in sea ice on which they shelter when molting...
