Google brings Android to TVs, cars
2014-06-26 08:59:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Google has updated its Chromecast and Android TV software at its I/O conference as part of the over 5,000 new APIs released to developers. The Chromecast HDMI dongle will receive an update to add new features to the streaming device. These include the ability to allow others to cast to your TV without needing to be on the same Wi-Fi network, a customizable homescreen and casting content from an Android phone or tablet screen directly to the TV. Google is also integrating the Android software in the TV experience with the launch of Android TV, an OS to bring Android apps and games to TV sets and set-top boxes. Features include voice search to find a programme, games or music, a gamepad to play Android games on the larger screen and support for Google Cast technology. The first Android TV devices are expected to ship from a range of consumer electronics companies later this year. Google is also bringing Android to cars, with Android Auto expected to launch in the first vehicles later this year. Built into the cars controls, the software connects with an Android smartphone to give access to features such as Google Maps, Play Music, call and text alerts and other app notifications. The software is supported by the group of leading carmakers the Open Automotive Alliance, formed earlier this year to integrate Android in the driving experience.
