For Corn, Fickle Weather Makes For Uncertain Yields

2013-04-24 09:24:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

National Public Radio: "There are other things that can limit yield, and planting date isn't necessarily even the most important one," says University of Missouri agronomist Brent Myers. "But it is something we have to consider. And we want to try to get that corn planted in that timely window of, say, after the first week of April to the first week in May." At his farm in Centralia, Mo., Gary Riedel, 69, in his green baseball cap and Western-style shirt, is just itching to plant corn on 1,000 acres of his 2,300-acre...

Nitrogen Efficiency, Application Timing Increase Corn Yields

2013-04-22 22:29:00| Corn & Soybean Digest

Todays hybrids produce more corn yield per unit of nitrogen than older hybrids, according to a new Purdue study. Modern hybrids absorb more than half of their final N content after flowering. In fact, they absorb 27% more total N from the soil after flowering than hybrids grown between 1950 and 1990, says a newly released Purdue study. Todays hybrids absorb more grain-N during grain fill, as opposed to N being remobilized from plant leaves and stems. The higher amount and duration of N uptake contributed to better grain yields, even as actual grain N concentrations decline; hybrids are much more efficient. But as corn plants increase N use, they increase their uptake of other nutrients. read more

Trace Gas Analyzer recovers high Argon yields in ASU process.

2013-04-19 14:55:08| Industrial Newsroom - All News for Today

Using advanced gas chromatograph technology, SERVOPRO Chroma provides measurements that enable complete evaluation of efficiency of air separation process. Analyzer can be configured for sub ppm analysis of Nitrogen in crude Argon, which cannot be obtained by trace N2 in Ar analyzers or by thermal conductivity detectors. Together, combination of plasma emission detector and dopant injection technology provides extremely stable N2 measurement – and requires only argon carrier gas to function. Conservation policies that boost farm yields may ultimately undermine forest protection, argues study

2013-04-17 07:11:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Mongabay: Rising agricultural profitability due to higher prices, improved crop productivity, and forest conservation itself could make it increasingly difficult for conservation programs tied to payments for ecosystem services to succeed, warns a study published this week in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The prediction is based on a model that forecasts the potential impact of agricultural intensification on small farmers' behavior in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)....
