New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority is in yet another bind . If state lawmakers do not agree to fund the remainder of the MTA's five-year capital plan, the deadline for which is coming up in June, there may be a need to increase fares and tolls by 15 percent in order to make ends meet.

Single rides can jump to as high as $3.16 if the state Legislature does not bail out the MTA. Millions of commuters could soon get hit with a 15% fare and toll hike if the state Legislature doesn't bail out the debt-ridden agency, a top transit official warned Monday.

Back In 2012, the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority tried to reject an ad that called opponents of Israel " savages ." This year, it tried to block an ad that quoted a Hamas-run television station as saying "Killing Jews is worship that draws us close to Allah."

After judge rules against it, MTA moves to ban political ads

The MTA's letter was sent to Judge John Koeltl on April 24. The judge had ordered the MTA to accept a pro-Israel advocacy group's political advertisement containing the phrase "Hamas Killing Jews" because it is protected speech. MTA lawyer Peter Sistrom said the agency has long considered revising its advertising policy.

MTA: LIRR ridership increased last year by 3 percent

Ferrara Long Island Rail Road ridership rose last year by 3 percent, with strongest growth "during non-rush hours, on non-Manhattan commutes and for nonwork trips," the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said Monday.
