The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is exploring ways to reduce the number of people getting struck by trains, said Thomas Prendergast, the chairman and chief executive of the MTA. The head of the region's mass-transit system offered a glimpse into its future Friday, outlining some solutions it is considering for subways, bridges and tunnels.

An annual Sunday holiday season tradition returns: original IND subway cars from the 1930s will run in service on part of the E and F lines between Queens Plaza and 2nd Avenue every Sunday from November 30 through December 28. The wicker seats! The ceiling fans! The groaning prewar traction motors! The smell of steel dust! The bewildered passengers! In addition, five retired buses manufactured from the 1950s through 1970s will run weekdays on the 42nd Street crosstown route. MTA Press Release here.

As the Verrazano Bridge turns 50, the MTA makes progress on 2 major makeovers

As the Verrazano Bridge rings in its 50th birthday, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is working on two major projects to update its aging roadway and improve general traffic flow to and from Staten Island. The two big facelifts will come by way of the Toll Plaza Improvement Project and the Upper Level Deck Replacement plan, which are in quite different stages of progress.

November 18th, 2014 - The Metropolitan Transportation Authority today unveiled proposals to increase fares and tolls by 4% over the next two years. Despite rising operational costs, the MTA's continued budget discipline and increased ridership allow the MTA to limit fare and toll increases to the equivalent of 2% a year.
