Associated Press: Environmental activists in Portland are protesting the arrival of the Fennica, a vessel that Royal Dutch Shell PLC plans to use in its Arctic offshore drilling project after it's repaired. The damaged ship, a 380-foot icebreaker, arrived at a Swan Island dry dock about 3 a.m. Saturday. The icebreaker is a key part of Shell's exploration and spill-response plan off Alaska's northwest coast. It protects Shell's fleet from ice and carries equipment that can stop gushing oil. Software AIV Engineer Satellite, Linux, perl, Shell Bristol 35k60k A professional engineering and consultancy services company to spacecraft operators and spacecraft primes is actively seeking a Software Systems Engineer. The Space Division seeks a versatile, enthusiastic and knowledgeable engineer to be part of the team responsible for the Assembly, Integration and Validation AIV activities for two ground control segment elements of the Galileo satellite constellation. The first assignment involves performing a customer facing onsite role for the Galileo mission. The OPF is the Operations Preparation Facility which is the element responsible for providing an environment to the satellite operators for developing and maintaining operations configuration data, including spacecraft databases, procedures, planning and flight dynamics databases. The SCPF is the Spacecraft Constellation Planning Facility which is the element responsible for scheduling contacts between for the constellation of satellites and the ground stations. The job will be based across a number of sites in Europe to provide full time support of AIV activities. The role involves working both independently and as part of a team to perform Installation of software on the target environment Preparationdevelopment of test procedures Supporting acceptance campaigns including the execution of test procedures Reporting and writing all AIV documentation related to SCPF and OPF Analysing anomalies, providing the first line of investigation Providing support to users and support for operations Essential skills The successful candidate will have a software engineering background with experience in AIV activities. Experience with writing and executing tests is essential. The project standards must be adhered to and therefore an understanding of good software standards are required and an ability to work within project guidelines. The role will be customer facing, so the candidate must be fluent in English and confident in their role representing the company and interfacing with the customer and operators. As the role will include support in several European countries the candidate must be eligible to work across Europe and have a willingness to travel regularly. It will be necessary to obtain Security Clearance for some aspects of the project. Desirable skills Linux The software is predominantly a Linux based solution, so an understanding of the Linux command interface would be useful, together with scripting knowledge e.g. perl and shell scripts. Requirements Engineering Tests will predominantly be for requirements verification, so an understanding of requirements engineering Languages As the role will include travel to Germany and Italy, a conversational ability in those languages may be beneficial, although not essential. Having prior experience of the Galileo mission is not a prerequisite for this position but can be an advantage.
