Fracking can cause nearby abandoned wells leak methane: Study

Reuters: Hydraulic fracturing can cause nearby abandoned oil wells to leak methane, according to a study published on Tuesday in the peer-reviewed Water Resources Research journal, marking a potentially large source of unrecorded greenhouse gas emissions. Researchers at the University of Vermont examined a part of New York state overlying the Marcellus shale gas reservoir to determine the chances that a newly fracked well there would intersect one of the state's thousands of existing wellbores. Dirty pipeline: Methane from fracking sites can flow to abandoned wells, new study shows
2015-10-20 21:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: As debate roils over EPA regulations proposed this month limiting the release of the potent greenhouse gas methane during fracking operations, a new University of Vermont study funded by the National Science Foundation shows that abandoned oil and gas wells near fracking sites can be conduits for methane escape not currently being measured. The study, to be published in Water Resources Research on October 20, demonstrates that fractures in surrounding rock produced by the hydraulic fracturing process...
Oklahoma cracks down more disposal wells after Cushing quakes
2015-10-20 17:29:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Reuters: Oklahoma regulators are cracking down harder on saltwater disposal wells near the vitally important Cushing crude storage hub, where a rash of quakes have stoked concerns its tanks and pipelines may not be designed to handle a major seismic event. The state's oil and gas regulator late on Monday said all saltwater disposal wells within a 10-mile radius of Cushing could face new limits. It has also basically halted approvals for new disposal wells for the time being and ordered 13 wells to shut in...

With Abandoned Gas Wells, States Are Left With The Cleanup Bill
2015-10-19 23:45:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
National Public Radio: When energy booms go bust, the public is often left responsible for the cleanup. That's because while most states and the federal government make companies put up at least some money in advance to pay for any mess they leave behind, it's often not enough. After the methane industry collapse, there were almost 4,000 wells in Wyoming that the company responsible walked away from. Now, the state has to pay the price. Driving around the Powder River Basin in northeast Wyoming with Jeff Campbell...
