Earlier this year we tested several consumer-level 802.11ac routers. Here, we take a look at two enterprise-level access points. They're a part of the so-called "Wave 1" phase of the 802.11ac standard: both access points support up to three spatial streams and 80 MHz wide channels, offering theoretical data rates up to 1.3Gbps. But just as we saw with the 802.11ac routers, you won't get throughput rates nearly that fast.

Cisco acquires Whiptail to build faster servers

(Telecompaper) Cisco has signed an agreement to acquire solid-state memory system company Whiptail to enhance its Unified Computing System (UCS). Scalable from 1 to 30 nodes, Whiptail systems can deliver over four million IOPS and 360 Terabytes of raw capacity to help Cisco provide the workload optimisation required in the 'App Economy'. Under the terms of the deal, Cisco will pay around USD 415 million in cash and retention-based incentives in exchange for all shares of the privately-held company. The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of October, subject to customary closing conditions.

Cisco takes aim at security services with new division

Cisco today said it would add a security arm to its existing services division with an eye toward pushing its support of its security products as well as offering a range of managed security services. Bryan Palma, the senior vice president and general manager of the newly created Services Security Practice, said Cisco plans to offer new types of managed security services based on Cisco security products, though he did not provide detail on what that might be specifically and how it would be done.
