Earth Observation Mission Analysis Engineer

A Spanish leader company in Aerospace Engineering and Scientific services with more than 45 years of experience working for NASA and 35 years working for ESA seeks a candidate for a postion of Earth Observation Mission Analysis Engineer located at ESTEC Netherlands. The Earth observation data analysis engineer is expected to support projects can be during any phase andor programmes for studies on new concepts. The specific activities may relate to simulations and analysis of observations and products, to Level 1b andor Level 2 product and algorithm aspects and to data analysis for validation and mission performance during phase E of an Earth observation mission. The specific analysis can be related to satellite or dedicated suborbital mission campaign concepts. Specific tasks The contractor shall support the SMOS mission scientist, the SMOS mission manager, and the STSE program manager. The SMOS specific tasks include Support the exploitation studies funded through the SMOS project. This includes the contract with ECMWF on data assimilation. Support the preparation of SMOS publications and presentations. Support the implementation of new studies related to the SMOS mission. Support the analysis of SVRT results obtained over oceans and DOMEC. Support future work on the SMOS L2 ocean salinity processor. The STSE specific tasks include 1. Support to EOPSM a. Preparation of SoW and implementation of SMOS Ice II b. Support to preparation and implementation of SMOS Permafrost CCN c. SMOS NN 3 month CCN 2. Support to EOPSA I. Support STSE project preparation and management a. Preparation of SoW for SMOS Storms followon TO DF b. Support SOLAS OceanFlux Upwelling follow on activity d. Support management of relevant oceanSMOS related STSE Pathfinders 23 small feasibilities II. Support Internal projects a. Complete SMOS TS diagrams internal project b. Maintain support to SMOS water cycle internal project c. Complete SMOS SVR internal project III. The Changing Earth SciNET a. Maintain the coordination of projects and activities b. Support to the preparation of the next call for proposals in collaboration with CCI c. Prepare new Springer Briefs volume dedicated to the second call. d. Prepare updated brochure for the three calls e. Update the web with the project results and the new projects. Specific Qualification Requirements The contractor shall be a senior scientistengineer holding a PhD in geophysical sciences e.g. oceanography, meteorology, physics, mathematics or engineering with a strong background in satellite remote sensing using Lband radiometry. This includes handson experience with SMOS L1 and L2 data processing and a good knowledge of the corresponding application areas. Furthermore, knowledge of and experience with the STSE programme is mandatory. Technical skills shall include programming and a good knowledge of relevant software packages. The applicant shall be able to work both autonomously and as a part of a team. A good knowledge of the English language is expected. Earth Observation Ground Segment Engineer for Level 1 and 2 Data EOP12 Overview The ADMAeolus mission includes links to details on the ground segment and the data products. Extended knowledge of data analysisprocessing statistics, error budgets simulations data tools such as Mathlab. Working knowledge on remote sensing techniques, with a focus on optical systems transmissions, backscatter, extinction processing algorithms detectors. Good knowledge of computer environment Linux, GNU compilers, Mathlab, scripting such as python, shell scripts, perl. Affinity with numerical weather prediction is an advantage. Good level of autonomy and organizing skills are desired. Good communication and analytical skills to interface with colleagues within ESA and with external partners and industry are essential. To support our customer in the definition and development of a suite of system test tools and test data for an upcoming Earth observation programme. Responsibilities Duties The activities performed by the Engineer will be an input for the overall System and ground segment VV activities. The Engineer will typically be involved in tasks related to test tools test data, with focus on tools data required for VV of instrument data processing chains. Tools can serve for example the purpose of test data generation manipulation reformatting, test data injection into the ground segment and test data collection analysis. Typical tasks include Identification of the suite of test tools and test data required to support VV activities, and definition of development procurement approach and associated planning. Preparation of User Requirement Documents, Statements of Work, etc., as needed as input for development andor procurement activities. Support for inhouse development and validation of test tools and their maintenance. Support for procurements of test tools test data, including the analysis of received deliverables and attending acceptance tests. Support for acceptance of test tools test data provided by partners. Simulation of test data sets for VV using available tools compilation of test data sets using real data from satellite instrument onground tests or inorbit operation. In case of tools to be connected to the ground segment, input for the specification and test of relevant interfaces. Support for configuration management of tools test data sets, using applicable EUMETSAT processes. Operation of the tools, or support for it, when used for system and ground segment VV activities. Contributions to the analysis of test results and the preparation of test reports. In addition the Engineer will be involved in some more general tasks Participation in relevant internal and external meetings. Regular review of System level documentation dealing with requirements, system concepts, architecture and design, technical analyses, to identify information of importance for test tools test data. In addition, and with the same aim, analysis of documents provided by other teams in EUMETSAT and by external partners. Support for the preparation of documentation for System level reviews, during the covered period the System Requirements Review and Preliminary Design Review. Some activities will involve interactions with other teams, primarily in the LEO division, and also, as relevant for the work, with engineers at partner agencies. Essential Skills University degree in the domain of engineering, physics or equivalent. Several years experience in the following is necessary Experience with the development of onground processing of data from satellite instruments for Earth observation. Direct involvement in VV activities for instrument processing chains, including production of test tools and of test data. Experience with software specification, design and development and relevant standards. Very good skills in higher programming languages, such as Fortran, CC, Java. The Engineer shall be able to fulfil the assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision, have a systematic approach to work, be able to plan hisher work and to cope with tight schedules and multiple tasks. Heshe shall have the capability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation. Good communication skills verbal and written are important. Heshe shall be willing to work in a team of engineers and in cooperation with industry and partner agencies.
