Irish govt reaches deal for Apple to pay EUR 13 bln in taxes into escrow fund

(Telecompaper) The Irish government announced that it's signed an agreement with Apple that will see the company pay the EUR 13 billion in taxes claimed by the European Commission into an escrow account by the end of Q3. The money for alleged illegal state aid will remain in the account until the appeal by Apple and the Irish state is heard.
Iranian govt bans state bodies from using Telegram app, Khamenei shuts account

(Telecompaper) The Iranian government has banned state bodies from using the Telegram instant messaging app as Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's office said his account would shut down to protect national security, ISNA reported. The order came days after Russia, Iran's ally in the Syrian war, started blocking Telegram in its territory after the company's repeated refusal to give Russian state security services access to users' secret messages.

Rakuten secures govt approval to launch as 4th mobile operator

(Telecompaper) E-commerce group Rakuten has received approval to launch as Japan's fourth mobile provider, reports the Japan Times. An Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry advisory board approved Rakuten's application for a 4G mobile licence, which the company had submitted in February. The decision is expected to be formally endorsed by the ministry at a later date, marking the first time a new entrant has been approved since eAccess (now part of SoftBank) was granted bandwidth 13 years ago.

Canada to create 5G corridor with CAD 400 mln from govt, tech firms

(Telecompaper) Canada wants to create a 5G corridor and will be investing over CAD 400 mln into the project, and into 5G research in general, CBCNews reported. The first CAD 200 million, for research, will come from the federal government, as well as from the governments of Ontario and Quebec. Another CAD 200 million will come from companies such as Ericsson, Ciena Canada, Thales Canada, IBM and CGI. This money will go to getting the corridor, and its facilities, up and running.
