Namibian telecoms watchdog blocks MTC stake sale to state ahead of postal holding dismantling

2017-11-13 10:22:00| Telecompaper Headlines

(Telecompaper) The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) has blocked a plan by the government to buy 34 percent of mobile operator MTC in a deal worth over NAD 3 billion, The Namibian reported. The government already owns 66 percent of MTC through Namibia Post and Telecommunications Holdings (NPTH), while 34 percent belongs to Portugal Telecom. In 2016, the cabinet approved a plan for NPTH to buy Portugal Telecom's 34 percent shareholding, worth over NAD 3 billion, using money from the Government Institutions Pension Fund (GIPF).
