Obama backs FCC proposal to open up set-top box market

(Telecompaper) President Obama has announced that his Administration is supporting the FCC's proposal to open up cable set-top boxes to competition from new apps and devices. Under the proposal, families will be able to own an STB rather than having to rent one, and a single device will be able to integrate cable, satellite and online streaming apps. The announcement was welcomed by consumer rights group Public Knowledge.
