The Astrophysics Group of SRON and the Department of Astrophysics of the Radboud University have a vacancy for a PhD student fm SRONs mission is to bring about breakthroughs in international space research. The institute develops pioneering technology and advanced space instruments, and uses them to pursue fundamental astrophysical research, Earth science and exoplanetary research. SRON invites applications for this 4year PhD position funded by ERC Consolidator Grant number 647208 to Dr. Peter Jonker. The PhD student will work in the group of Dr. Peter Jonker. The endgoal of the work is to determine whether intermediatemass black holes exist in ultraluminous Xray sources and if so what their mass distribution is. The employed tools include nearinfrared imaging and spectroscopy of relatively nearby ultraluminous Xray sources. The PhD student will be based in Utrecht and part of the time in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Employment conditions Employment of this fulltime position is by NWO The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research and will be for a period of up to 4 years. The salary will be in accordance with the salary scales of NWO.
