Many users of GPS believe its main function is to provide a means of deriving position, but the constellation of satellites is also a remarkably efficient time keeper. Each satellite contains 4 atomic clocks, so when their signals are received by any GPS enabled device, the synchronized time is within 100 billionths of a second, without the cost of owning, operating, and maintaining atomic clocks.
