US stocks rise, led by gains for energy stocks; Atmel jumps on Dialog deal

U.S. stocks rose in midday trading Monday as investors tried to look beyond the uncertain timing of a possible interest rate increase by the Federal Reserve. Nine of the 10 industry groups in the Standard and Poor's 500 index gained.
