The top five U.S. mobile operators have agreed to let their customers unlock their devices and move to another provider under pressure from the U.S. Congress and Federal Communications Commission. AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile, and U.S. Cellular have signed on to an agreement that allows customers to unlock their mobile phones and other devices once they have fulfilled their contracts with their original carrier, mobile trade group CTIA announced Thursday.

FCC, mobile carriers agree on mobile phone unlocking plan
2013-12-12 21:16:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) US carriers AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular and Verizon Wireless plan to make it easier for consumers to unlock their mobile phones for use on a competitor's network. Industry group CTIA announced the voluntary agreement which will form part of the CTIA industry code of conduct. The announcement comes at the prompting of the new FCC chairman, Tom Wheeler, who last month said the service should be in place by Christmas. The CTIA announced six principles the operators will adopt in offering the service, half of which will be implemented within three months and the remainder within 12 months. Postpaid customers will be able to unlock their phones after completing their subscription contract or phone payments, and prepaid users can unlock the device after a year of service with the carrier. Customers will be notified when their devices become eligible for unlocking, and those who request the service will have their devices unlocked within two working days.

Reuters: EU energy ministers on Thursday failed to agree on a compromise deal to limit the use of transport fuels made from food crops, which critics say pushes up food prices and can do more harm than good to the environment. EU Energy Commissioner Guenther Oettinger said the delay would only damage the European Union in its efforts to reduce dependence on imported oil and gas and curb greenhouse gas emissions. "If we delay and postpone, the winners will be OPEC and Russia," he said. Last year in...
