OS Flaw Leaves Android Wide Open for App Hack Attacks

A flaw in Android's GUI framework let university researchers hack into applications with up to 92 percent success. They tested apps from Gmail, H&R Block, Newegg, WebMD, Chase Bank, Hotels.com and Amazon. "Changes in the shared memory side channel allow an attacker to infer if there is an activity transition going on in the foreground," said researcher Zhiyun Qian, an assistant professor at UCR.
Users should patch critical flaw in Adobe Reader and Acrobat, researchers say

Adobe Systems has released security patches for its Flash Player, Reader and Acrobat products, addressing a total of eight vulnerabilities, including one that is being exploited by attackers. The actively exploited flaw affects Adobe Reader and was found by researchers from antivirus vendor Kaspersky Lab. The flaw was being used in isolated attacks, they said.

Cisco patches traffic snooping flaw in its networking gear

Cisco Systems said attackers could disrupt or intercept traffic in many of its networking products unless a new security update is applied to the software they run. The issue affects the implementation of the Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) routing protocol and its Link State Advertisement (LSA) database in particular. This protocol is used for determining the shortest routing paths inside an Autonomous System (AS) -- a collection of routing policies for IP (Internet Protocol) addresses controlled by ISPs and large organizations.

This flaw is so serious that, now that it has been revealed, you probably shouldn't plug a USB device into your computer ever again. There are no known effective defenses against this variety of USB attack. The USB IF itself notes that your only defense against this new attack vector is to only use USB devices that you 100% trust -- but even then, as we'll outline below, this won't always protect you.
