The Sussex County Board of Freeholders voted Tuesday morning to appoint former Sparta mayor and councilman Michael Spekhardt to fill one of two remaining vacancies on the Sussex Community College Board of Trustees. Spekhardt will take the place of former trustee and board chairman Glenn Gavan, who resigned in August in the wake of disclosures that he had business dealings with CP Engineers, the college's engineering firm.

Mayor Alvin Brown said Wednesday he strongly supports a new pension-reform financing proposal in which the city and JEA would borrow $240 million and pump it immediately into the underfunded Police and Fire Pension Fund. Former City Council member Matt Carlucci and business executive Charlie Appleby first unveiled the proposal Tuesday, saying they developed the proposal in consultation with the mayor and his top aides.
