Greenland might be contributing more to sea level rise than we thought
2016-01-05 22:22:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Grist: The Greenland ice sheet is starting to look a lot like the ice luge that ruined your New Year`s Eve. Except, instead of drunk faces at the end of it, there`s an ocean. And instead of cheap vodka flowing down its surface, there`s meltwater. It shouldn`t surprise you that Greenland is slowly melting away and will ultimately contribute to what could be catastrophic sea level rise (and if it does surprise you, then welcome to 2016 - you`re going to want to sit down for this). But until recently, the...

Climate change is altering Greenland ice sheet, accelerating sea level rise
2016-01-04 22:02:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
ScienceDaily: The Greenland ice sheet has traditionally been pictured as a bit of a sponge for glacier meltwater, but new research has found it is rapidly losing the ability to buffer its contribution to rising sea levels, says a York University researcher. York U Professor William Colgan, a co-author on the study published in the journal Nature Climate Change, helped analyse data from three expeditions to the Greenland ice sheet in 2012, 2013 and 2015. The research was done in conjunction with lead researcher...

Waterbirds in eastern Australia lowest breeding level on record
2015-12-26 15:59:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed
Australian Broadcasting Corporation: A stocktake of waterbirds in eastern Australia has shown the lowest breeding level on record. The annual aerial survey, conducted by the Centre for Ecosystem Science at the University of NSW, confirmed a dramatic long-term decline in the number of waterbirds. Director Richard Kingsford said that over 33 years of counting, average numbers had fallen more than 60 per cent. The trend continued in 2015 with a further drop compared to the previous three-to-five-year period. "This is the second...
