GameStop, faced with a shrinking core business selling video games, is accelerating its effort to diversify by adding to its stores that offer AT&T wireless plans and acquiring other technology retail chains. The Grapevine, Texas-based company, which won court approval to take over 163 locations from bankrupt RadioShack, is looking for acquisitions, Chief Operating Officer Tony Bartel said last month after reporting fourth- quarter results.

Sensing the changing pattern of consumer spending in the discretionary space, Voltas, a Tata Group company, is planning to re-enter some of the brands in the consumer durable space, a move aimed at cutting its dependence on its traditional air-condition and water cooler businesses in the white goods space. Tata Strategic Management Group as well as Voltas are currently working on segments the Tata Group outfit can enter, and in some cases, re-enter since the 90s, said Pradeep Bakshi, president and chief operating officer, unitary air-conditioner division of the company.

KENYAN sugar producers needed to slash costs and diversify into products like ethanol to make the industry more competitive before import safeguards were removed next year, agriculture principal secretary Sicily Kariuki said yesterday. In February, Kenya was given a one-year extension to fully open up the sugar trade to the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa). Kenya enforces a quota on the amount of sugar that can be imported duty free from Comesa nations to protect its farmers whose production cost of at least $570 (R6 600) a ton is more than twice as much as Egypt. Kenya wanted the industry to move away from being a traditional high-cost, single-commodity supplier to a competitive, multiproduct industry that is self-sufficient, Kariuki said. Bloomberg
