SFR announces LTE launch across Paris
2013-08-28 07:34:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) French operator SFR has officially launched its Parisian LTE network, claiming its 4G service offers more coverage than competitors and asserting that it will be available across the whole city by the end of the year. Having begun its Paris LTE network in financial district La Defense at the end of January, SFR plans yet another launch of LTE in Paris at a celebration planned for 21 September. The operator says its service will cover 300 municipalities in the Ile-de-France region in and around Paris at the end of the year. The operator aims to cover 70 percent of the French population with LTE and DC-HSPA+ by year-end, half of which in LTE. SFR sells 17 LTE smartphones, starting at EUR 1, and its 4G plans for consumers begin at EUR 29.99 a month. SFR Business Team offers LTE plans to enterprise customers. It is offering a EUR 30 discount on a range of LTE smartphones until 9 September in participating stores.

Samsung to launch LTE Advanced version of Galaxy S4
2013-06-17 14:33:00| Telecompaper Headlines
(Telecompaper) Samsung plans to sell a version of its Galaxy S4 smartphone running the faster LTE Advanced technology as early as this month, co-CEO JK Shin told Reuters in an interview. The phone will launch initially in South Korea, and Samsung also is in talks with several overseas carriers to take the phone, Shin said. He declined to name the carriers. This would be the first commercial launch of a LTE Advanced phone, offering twice the speeds of existing LTE systems. The phones will be powered by Qualcomm chips. Shin showed little concern about sales prospects for the S4, which hit stores in late April. "S4 sales remain strong. It's selling far stronger than the (Galaxy) S III ... and the new LTE-Advanced (4G) phone will be another addition to our high-end segment offerings that ensure healthy profit margins," Shin said. Shin declined to provide forecasts for S4 sales. Shin also said sales of Samsung's tablet products in the U.S. market jumped 3.3 times since it installed brand shops within Best Buy's stores in April, and the company is now considering expanding the format in Latin America and the UK. Samsung declined to name potential retailers.
