Arkansas pipeline spill casts shadow over Keystone XL

LA Times: On warm spring evenings, North Starlite Drive buzzed with children. They cycled around the cul-de-sac at the end of the wide, block-long road, shot baskets in driveways and inevitably wound up on the swing set and trampoline behind the Bartletts' large brick house. These days, there are no children. Yellow police tape stretches across the turns from the main road onto the street. All 22 families who lived there are gone. About 2:45 p.m. on March 29, an underground ExxonMobil oil pipeline ruptured...

State Department Releases Keystone Pipeline Comments

2013-05-24 06:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Bloomberg: The U.S. State Department released about 100,000 public comments it has received on TransCanada Corp. (TRP)s proposed Keystone XL pipeline, the first batch of more than 1.2 million submitted to the agency on the project. The comments on a draft environmental impact study were posted yesterday on a government website a month after the State Department reversed an earlier decision not to release them. The agency said last night in a statement that it would publish comments in similarly sized batches...

Analysis: Bill to Fast-Track Keystone Pipeline Loses Democratic Support. But Why?

2013-05-23 21:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

InsideClimate: Republicans in the House of Representatives pushed through a bill on Wednesday that would force federal approval of the Keystone XL pipeline without further review. The vote was 241 to 175. The legislation is the latest of several attempts by Congress to force the Obama administration's hand. It is unlikely to be taken up in the Senate and the White House has threatened a veto. If anything, the bill's backers may have lost ground this time, and ended up with a much more partisan divide. Only 19...

Keystone pipeline: House votes to bypass Obama

2013-05-23 07:30:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Guardian: Congress has voted to shut Barack Obama out of the biggest environmental decision of his presidency -- the fate of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline -- and claimed the authority to approve the project. The vote to approve the pipeline, which passed 241-175 in the Republican-controlled house, was pure political theatre. The measure would dispense with additional environmental reviews of the pipeline and would allow only 60 days for legal challenges. The bill was unlikely to pass in the Senate...

Stephen Harper touts Keystone XL pipeline in New York, downplays oilsands emissions

2013-05-18 16:00:00| Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming Newsfeed

Edmonton Journal: The Keystone XL pipeline absolutely needs to go ahead because it will create jobs and bring energy security to the United States, Prime Minister Stephen Harper told an audience primarily made up of elderly businessmen Thursday. He said construction of the 1,800-kilometre pipeline will create 40,000 jobs and bring enough oil to reduce American dependence on offshore oil by 40 per cent. This is an enormous benefit to the United States in terms of long-term energy security, he said. At...
