The commission on Tuesday authorized the $123.5 million increase effective immediately for customers of Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power. The PSC says the average residential customer will see an immediate increase of about $14.30 per month in their bill.

Three subsidiaries of North Carolina-based Duke Energy Corporation, the largest utility in the United States, pleaded guilty to nine criminal violations of the Clean Water Act at several of its North Carolina facilities and agreed to pay a $68 million criminal fine and spend $34 million on environmental projects and land conservation to benefit rivers and wetlands in North Carolina and Virginia. Four of the charges are the direct result of the massive coal ash spill from the Dan River steam station into the Dan River near Eden, N.C., in February 2014.

Since its fall, Nortel broke apart and sold off various chunks of its business, including patents and wireless technology. The scraps of bankrupt Nortel Networks, once considered the powerhouse of Canada's tech sector, will be split between the various subsidiaries it once operated around the world, according to decisions released Tuesday.

Justice Department says Exxon Mobil subsidiaries to pay nearly $5M for 2013 Arkansas oil spill

The Justice Department says two subsidiaries of Exxon Mobil have agreed to pay almost $5 million in government penalties for a 2013 oil spill in a central Arkansas community. As part of a consent decree set to be filed in a Little Rock federal court Wednesday, the companies would pay about $3.2 million in federal civil penalties in addition to addressing pipeline safety issues and oil-response capacity.
