When buying used cars, local dealers and the National Insurance Crime Bureau agree that if it seems like too good of a deal, it probably is. Recent flooding in Texas has caused water damage to an estimated 7,000 to 10,000 vehicles, according to an estimate from Copart, a company that works for insurers to handle vehicles damaged in catastrophes.

Wisconsin may be 1,200 miles away from Texas and Oklahoma, but the effects of wide scale flooding there will eventually be felt in the upper Midwest, because about half of the thousands of flood damaged vehicles that should end up in a salvage yard will instead be redirected to a used car sales lot. "History shows that about half of the vehicles that are damaged by these flood waters return back to the road, and some of them are cleaned up cosmetically and sold to unsuspecting consumers," said Christopher Basso, public relations manager for CARFAX.
